VHF SRC Operators Certificate Exam

RYA VHF Course + Exam

Apart from being useful for routine communication a marine VHF radio, is an essential piece of safety equipment, however to legally have one on board, there has to be at least one person with the VHF SRC Operators Certificate. Successful completion of this one day RYA VHF SRC Radio Course will provide you with this certificate and will also allow you to supervise untrained people in its use on board your vessel.

The course includes:

  • Operation of marine VHF/DSC (digital selective calling) equipment
  • The phonetic alphabet
  • Basic radio language
  • Use of correct channels
  • Making calls to other stations
  • Sending a distress alert and distress Mayday message
  • Sending an urgency alert and Pan Pan message
  • Sending a safety alert and Securité message
  • Making routine alerts and calls
  • Automatic Transmitter Identification System – ATIS
  • Radio Rules and regulations

The DSC element of the radio falls within the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) and as such you will also be taught about other equipment which falls within this scheme such as Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRBs) and Search and Rescue Transponders (SARTs).

RYA First Aid

The RYA First Aid Course is designed to teach you what to do in many of the situations where people have accidents whilst on a small craft, from how to resuscitate someone to how to treat minor cuts.
This course is useful for anyone who goes out on the water and at the end of the course you will qualify for the RYA First Aid Certificate which is valid for 3 years from time of issue.
The key aims of the RYA First Aid Course are to ensure that the student is able to:

  • Perform CPR and know how this differs on a drowned person
  • Understand the effect of cold shock and how to treat hypothermia from immersion and exposure
  • Recognise the signs and implications of reduced responsiveness in a person with a head injury
  • Apply direct pressure to a wound and control bleeding.
  • Recognise and treat seasickness and dehydration
  • Obtain medical advice and assistance using the VHF radio
  • Know how to prepare for helicopter evacuation
  • Demonstrate how to turn a casualty into the recovery position
  • Understanding the importance of maintaining the airway
