Youth Training

From non sailor to a basic understanding of how a boat sails, to knowledge to help become a confident sailor, to rigging, launching and sailing in any direction, to sailing a double handed boat as crew or helm & solving a variety of problems afloat. Click on icon above to select your course.

Generally, you will be ready for these courses if you have completed RYA Stage 3 or 4, and have had some practice too. From the fundamentals getting off the start line and round the course to developing skills for open meetings and higher competition. Click on icon above to select your course.

A variety of non RYA courses for BSC members only, such as preparing for events ( racing & JW), step out of optimist, (Topper & Feva) improving skills (racing & JW) & courses not covered in RYA syllabus. Click on icon above to select your course.

    Youth

    Stage 1. This assumes no previous sailing knowledge but on completion of this stage, you will be able to steer a boat and understand the basic principles of sailing.

    Stage 2. You will have passed stage 1 and be looking forward to being able to tack and control boat speed and the learning the very important principles of collision avoidance!

    Stage 3. You will have passed stages 1 & 2 and will be growing in confidence as you will be consolidating on launching and recovery skills and learning new capsize drills and on completion of this stage, you will be able to sail a triangular course as a sailor, not as a beginner.

    Stage 4. Sail a double handed boat as crew or helm and solve a variety of problems afloat.

    Start Racing. Take your first steps to becoming a confident and successful racer.

    Intermediate Racing. Improve you racing technique and knowledge for racing at club level.

    Advanced Racing. Developing skills in preparation for open meetings and higher competition.

    Adult

    RYA Levels are a fantastic way of learning or improving your sailing skills.

    Level 1. This assumes no previous knowledge and is a great introduction to sailing. You will learn how to sail in all directions, including an awareness of launching and recovery.

    Level 2. This assumes sailing skills to the standard of Level 1. The course includes rigging, launching, and sailing in all directions. There is a capsize recovery and essential safety knowledge.

    Level 3. This assumes sailing skills to the standard of Level 2. You will consolidate previous skills sailing in all directions plus develop sailing techniques and boat control.

    Start Racing. This course introduces you to the fundamentals required to start club racing. This includes how to maximise boat speed and outwit your opponents. The pre-requisite is sailing ability and knowledge to at least the standard of Level 2 course.
