Courses Available

  • RYA Beginners Courses  - courses aimed at learning to sail, with no experience necessary and developing on the foundation of this learning, covering RYA Stages 1 -4.
  • RYA Improver’s & Advanced Courses - courses aimed at improving and developing skills and knowledge learning in RYA Stage 1-4.
  • RYA Racing Courses - courses teaching the very basic of club racing to teach techniques and skills to enable the sailor to confidently take part in higher level competition.
  • BSC Courses - a series of courses designed and laid on by the Club to both improve skills and enjoyment of any sailors time on the water.
  • RYA Dinghy Instructor Courses - a course to train and test a sailor to become a Dinghy Instructor.

RYA Beginners Courses


RYA Stages 1 - 3 Optimists & Feva

RYA Stages 1 – 3 are a fantastic way of learning or improving your sailing skills.

Stage 1. This assumes no previous sailing knowledge but on completion of this stage, you will be able to steer a boat and understand the basic principles of sailing.

Stage 2. You will have passed stage 1 and be looking forward to being able to tack and control boat speed and the learning the very important principles of collision avoidance!

Stage 3. You will have passed stages 1 & 2 and will be growing in confidence as you will be consolidating on launching and recovery skills and learning new capsize drills and on completion of this stage, you will be able to sail a triangular course as a sailor, not as a beginner.

Four or five day courses, starting at £250.

RYA Stage 4 (Fevas)

Course is designed for young people who can sail around a triangular course competently or who have RYA Stage 3. It is aimed at those moving into the Feva class for the first time from another class or those wishing to progress with their Feva sailing.

RYA Improver’s & Advanced Courses


RYA Improver's (Feva)

Generally, you will be ready for this course if you have completed Stage 3 or 4.

A five day course, starting at £250.

RYA Sailing with Spinnakers (Feva)

This assumes a sailing knowledge to level 2 and on this exciting course you will learn such things as boat setup, sailing downwind, gybing and recovery of a asymmetric spinnaker.

RYA Racing Courses


RYA Start Racing  Optimist & Feva

Take your first steps to becoming a confident and successful racer with this specially designed course. Participants must be competent to sail around a triangular course or possess RYA Stage 3 or Stage 4.

Two to five day courses, starting at £100.

RYA Start Racing (Topper) OB

Take your first steps to becoming a confident and successful racer with this specially designed course. Participants must be competent to sail around a triangular course or possess RYA Stage 3 or Stage 4.

A five day course, starting at £250.

RYA Intermediate Racing Optimist & Feva

For the sailor who has already completed RYA Start Racing and is now ready to progress to the next stage.

Four or five day course, starting at £200.

RYA Advanced Racing (Optimist) OB

For the more experienced sailor who has already completed RYA Start Racing and RYA Intermediate Racing, this course will develop techniques and skills to enable the sailor to confidently take part in higher level competition.

BSC Courses


Youth Winter Warm Up OB

This is a shore based session to enable people to prepare their boats effectively for the start of the season.
It will cover, how to rig Optimists, Teras, Toppers and 420s properly, Rigging for different wind conditions and any class specific features
After this session, there’s no excuse for not being ready for the first race of the season!

Feva Taster

This is a non RYA one day course designed to give younger sailors an experience of sailing a Feva under the watchful eye of an RYA Instructor. This one day taster is designed to appeal to those sailors who are looking to move on from their Optimist Tera or Topper and/or potentially to sail together with another young sailor on a crewed boat. It is assumed that the participant can tack, gybe, sail on all points of sailing and apply the 5 essentials in their current dinghy; this means they are at an equivalent experience level to RYA Stage 3.

Topper Race Training OB

Take your first steps to becoming a confident and successful racer with this specially designed course. Participants must be competent to sail around a triangular course or possess RYA Stage 3 or Stage 4.

A five day course, starting at £250.

420 Race Training

A two day course, starting at £100

Oppie Fridays

Training is informal in these sessions and the main purpose of Oppie Friday evenings is to give Optimist sailors invaluable time out on the water to build confidence in relaxed conditions. In essence it’s all about fun and enjoyment for all abilities for members and friends!

420 Class Training

This is a course dedicated to class racing in 420s. It is aimed at those existing 420 sailors who can tack, gybe, sail on all points of sailing and apply the 5 essentials; this means they are at least to an equivalent experience level to RYA Stage 3. The course is most appropriate for those who have some experience of racing and after attending the course might considering entering 420 Open meetings. Attendees need to bring their own 420. There is the possibility to gain the RYA’s Start Racing award.

RYA Dinghy Instructor Courses


RYA Dinghy Instructor Course

The instructor is a competent, experienced sailor capable of sailing a training boat in strong winds and handling small powerboats. The instructor has been assessed as competent to teach adults and children, beginners and improver's. Although responsible for teaching individuals and small groups, the instructor has not been assessed as competent in running a sailing centre, and should always work under the supervision of an RYA Senior instructor. Eligibility requirements, prior to the course candidates must fulfil the following:

1.Minimum age 16
2. Valid first aid certificate of a type approved by the RYA
3. RYA Powerboat Level 2 certificate
4. RYA Safe & Fun safeguarding certificate & pre-course work completed (accessed within the Safe & Fun course)
5. Pre-entry sailing assessment completed within 1 year prior to the instructor training course.
